GPS students win state award for book trailer

March 23, 2016

Lexington County School District One congratulates two Gilbert Primary School students who placed second in the picture book trailer competition conducted as part of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians 2016 South Carolina Book Award program.

Ethan Holmes and Hunter Rodabaugh, second-graders at GPS, used LEGO® building blocks to create scenes depicting a magical world, which were then photographed and incorporated in a video for a book trailer about “Journey” by Aaron Becker. “Journey,” a 2014 Caldecott Honor Book, depicts the adventures of a young girl who leaves boredom at home and discovers a magical realm in which she can use her imagination to control her destiny. The picture book features an imaginative adventure story told through elaborate illustrations that inspire wonder.

The two GPS students created the book trailer, which is designed to pique interest in reading a particular book, as part of the GPS Learning Commons Leaders program.

Holmes and Rodabaugh each received a book for placing second in the picture book trailer competition, and the GPS Learning Commons received a check in the amount of $75. The South Carolina Association of School Librarians announced the winners in the 2016 South Carolina Book Award program on March 6 during the association’s annual conference in Myrtle Beach.
