Graham helps secure $138 million for Charleston Harbor Deepening Project

December 19, 2019

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham made the following statements after the Senate voted in support of $138 million for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project.

“This is a giant step forward and great news for the Port of Charleston,” said Graham.  “I’m incredibly appreciative of President Trump, as well as my House and Senate colleagues, for making this happen.  The $138 million we secured is one of the most important milestones we have met.  It will help keep us on track toward project completion.”

Graham has been a leader in ensuring the Harbor Deepening Project moves forward.  As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, he was an early and ardent advocate, working with both the Obama and Trump Administrations to gather the necessary support.  He has repeatedly secured federal authorizations and funding to move the project forward.

“Charleston Harbor Deepening is about jobs – both today and in the future,” said Graham.  “The Port is the backbone of our state’s economy and responsible for over $60 billion in economic activity.  Today’s news ensures our port will continue to benefit South Carolina and American business in perpetuity.

“My goal from the start has to been clear: I want Charleston to be a premier port on the East Coast. With today’s vote we are on our way to turning that goal into reality.”

President Trump is expected to sign the legislation into law soon.
