Graham Newman Joins Chappell, Smith & Arden

COLUMBIA, SC – Mark D. Chappell is pleased to announce that Graham Newman, formerly of Richard A. Harpootlian, P.A., has joined Chappell, Smith & Arden, P.A. Newman adds his impressive experience to the Columbia-based firm’s Complex Litigation practice team.

Newman focuses on Class Actions, Business and Contract Litigation, Insurance Dispute cases, Consumer Protection cases and Product Liability cases in both State and Federal court. Trial court victories in which he has played a major role include a $14.5 million insurance bad faith verdict, an $8 million class action judgment, and a $4.75 million product liability verdict. Originally from Sumter, Newman attended the University of South Carolina Honors College where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated in 2001. Newman received the J. Strom Thurmond Scholarship to the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was awarded a Juris Doctor in 2004. He was admitted to the Bar the same year.

Newman clerked for the Honorable Howard P. King, Circuit Judge, before becoming a Sumter County Public Defender. Within his first year, he served as First Chair Attorney trying felony indictments before the South Carolina Court of General Sessions. He has also briefed numerous appeals before the South Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and United States Supreme Court. Newman has argued cases before the South Carolina Court of Appeals and the South Carolina Supreme Court.
