Greenville Area Parkinson Society hosting Member Celebration on April 23

April 14, 2022

The Greenville Area Parkinson Society (GAPS) will be hosting a Member Celebration event later this month as a cap to its spring fundraising drive.

The celebration will be a picnic-style gathering held at Conestee Park on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In addition, they plan to announce their fundraising and walking challenge winners that day.

During the months of March and April, GAPS has raised awareness about Parkinson’s Disease through fundraising and walking challenges that incorporated an engaging train theme to raise money for the organization’s free programs offered to people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers in the Upstate.

With Passenger Cars, Engineers, and Caboose Boosters, this year’s event plays on Soul Train with “Sole.” Recognizing exercise as a proven way to slow Parkinson’s Disease symptoms from progressing, GAPS’ Trek For Tokens challenge encourages walking and recording steps throughout the campaign in addition to fundraising for a designated “Passenger Car.”

Parkinson’s Disease is currently the fastest growing neurological disorder, and the local diagnoses are expected to double in the coming decade, so awareness and education about this disease are critical for our community.

“Our sole focus is on our members, and we must continue to fight for all families living with Parkinson’s Disease to live high-quality lives,” said Kamber Parker, GAPS Development Director.
