Greenville Country Club junior tennis players win big at USTA tournament

Four Greenville Country Club (GCC) junior tennis players placed in the USTA South Carolina Closed Clay Court Tennis Championship recently held at the Club’s Tennis Center this summer.
“With their hard work and discipline our junior tennis players continue to prove why they are some of the best players in the south,” Molly Weinandy, Assistant Director of Tennis at GCC, said. “The GCC tennis staff is constantly encouraging and rooting for our juniors as they travel across the country participating in tournaments. The junior tennis program at GCC encourages players to develop a love of the game while challenging them to accomplish new skills and goals. It’s always exciting watching our juniors grow through the game of tennis especially when it’s at our home courts.”
Annie Jennings defeated her opponents eight to one in the finals, becoming a Girls’ 16 & Under Doubles Champion. Establishing themselves as the Girls’ 14 & Under Doubles, Caroline and Sidney Mitchell defeated their opponents eight to six in the finals. Caroline also placed third for Girls’ 14 & Under Singles after defeating her opponent in the playoffs but losing her match in the semi-finals. Sidney was recognized in Girls’ 12 & Under Singles, placing second after a loss in the finals.
One of the Boys’ 16 & Under Doubles Champions was GCC’s Earle Russell who defeated his opponents eight to two in the finals. Russell also went on to become the Boys’ 18 & Under Singles Champion at the Tennessee State Open Jr. Clay Court Championships.
This Level 2 sanctioned event had 120 players and included 17 different events. For more information about the USTA, please visit www.usta.com.
