Greenville Technical College remains #1 in SC on Newsweek’s list of America’s Top Online Colleges
May 22, 2025For the second year in a row, Greenville Technical College (GTC) is ranked first in South Carolina out of the top 250 online learning colleges in the nation. In addition, the college is in the top ten among the nation’s community colleges, and ranked in the top 50 of all colleges. The list is compiled by Newsweek and global data firm Statista Inc.
GTC also achieved a five-star rating, denoting an aggregate score surpassing the median of all awarded institutions. GTC first made the list in 2023.
“Going from unranked in online education to second place and then first in the state two years in a row is something I’m very proud of,” said Dr. Larry Miller, vice president of Learning and Workforce Development. “I greatly appreciate our faculty and the collaborative spirit that made this win possible. But we’re not done yet. Our belief in continuous improvement will drive us to further enhance online courses so that we continue to move the needle on student outcomes.”
Research is based on an online survey of over 10,000 individuals in the U.S. who have used online courses to obtain an academic degree or acquire knowledge and skills for their jobs or hobbies. Respondents shared their experiences by rating the institutions on several criteria and could indicate their level of satisfaction with the organization and willingness to recommend it to others.
As Greenville Technical College pivoted to online teaching during the pandemic, GTC realized a need to redesign online course content to better meet student needs. The college joined Quality Matters, an international leader for quality assurance in online and innovative digital teaching and learning environments. Membership provides Greenville Technical College with access to a comprehensive, research-supported quality assurance process to design and develop accessible, engaging online courses.
