March 21, 2023

The Greenville Triumph, the Upstate’s premier men’s soccer team competing in the USL League One, is pleased to announce the team’s roster ahead of its fifth season. Consisting of 15 returning players and six additions, the roster now includes Leo Castro, Daniel Wu, Hassan Gabo, Lyam MacKinnon, Devin Boyce, and Tevin Shaw.

“This year’s team features a tremendous amount of talent, leadership, and discipline,” Head Coach John Harkes said. “We’ve made some tough decisions but are confident we’ve selected a team of high-quality players who will make us competitive during this historic season.”

Daniel Wu, an All-American and former Big East Defensive Player of the Year, and Hassan Gabo, a 19-year-old native of Somalia with ties to the team, will begin their professional careers with the Triumph and join its award-winning backline featuring several Greenville veterans.

Devin Boyce, a former All-League midfielder Devin Boyce and Tevin Shaw, who previously played for FC Tucson, strengthen the team’s midfield. In addition, the Triumph inked three-time All-Big East forward and Villanova alumni Lyam MacKinnon to add to the club’s attack. On Monday, the club signed veteran Columbian forward Leonardo Castro to round out the group of forwards.

Among the players returning to the pitch are defenders Brandon Fricke, Evan Lee, Jamie Smith, Nate Shultz, Noah Franke, and Tyler Polak; midfielders Venton Evans, Allen Gavilanes, Noah Pilato, and Aaron Walker, who has served as co-captain for all four of his seasons with the Triumph; forwards Alex Cox-Ashwood, Jacob Labovitz, and Lucas Coutinho; and goalkeepers Ben Hale and Jared Mazzola.

The Greenville Triumph will play its 2023 season at Furman University’s Paladin Stadium as the soccer club works toward construction of a multi-use stadium to host matches as early as 2024. Since its first season in 2019, the team has appeared in three league finals, including winning the USL League One Championship in 2020.

The Triumph kicks off its fifth season at home against the Richmond Kickers on March 25, and the women’s team, the Liberty, begin its second season in May. For tickets and information, visit www.greenvilletriumph.com and www.greenvilleliberty.com.
