Greenville Verizon Employees Stuff Care Packages for State’s Troops

December 8, 2014

The initiative was spearheaded by USO South Carolina to ease military personnel’s travel home for the Holidays.

GREENVILLE, SC — Hundreds of Verizon Wireless employees teamed with USO South Carolina to stuff care packages – assembly line style – at the wireless carrier’s regional headquarters in Greenville. The USO will take the portable packs of food and hygiene items to troops based across South Carolina to make their travels home for the holidays a little easier.

“Verizon is a tremendous partner and a great friend to our state’s servicemen and women,” said Joanie Thresher, director of USO South Carolina. “Our military members stationed at Fort Jackson and beyond travel home to every part of our nation for the Holidays, and these care packages add some cheer to the part of the season which we all find stressful—travel.”

Verizon contributed $15,000 to sponsor the initiative, and Walgreens supported the project by providing the hygiene and food items at cost. Employees at Verizon’s Brookfield Parkway campus worked together as a team to stuff 12,000 bags.

“We value the contributions of our military and wanted to show support in a way that will help them better enjoy spending time with family and friends back home this Holiday season,” said Jerry Fountain, president for Verizon Wireless in the Carolinas and Tennessee. “Our hats are off to USO South Carolina for taking care of our troops this time of year and all year long.”
