Greenville Women Giving hosts Middle School Matters initiative

October 5, 2015

WHAT: Greenville Women Giving, a women’s collective giving organization celebrating its 10th annual season of giving to the Greenville community, will host the first of a series of five planned spotlight events on Wednesday, October 21. The Keeping Students “on Track” event will highlight one of Greenville Women Giving’s five core grant funding areas: education. The luncheon will share how the $3 million grant has been used to keep at-risk middle school students on track to graduate from high school and will feature a panel discussion moderated by Tobi Kinsell, Director of OnTrack Greenville.

The Middle School Matters initiative focuses on engaging students through a broad network of support services designed to improve attendance, academic performance and behavior.

The luncheon panel includes Dr. Brooke Culclasure, Robert Morris, William Price and Megan Shropshire. Dr. Brooke Culclasure currently serves as Research Director at Furman University’s Riley Institute’s Center for Educational Leadership and Policy. Dr. Culclasure is the principal investigator of three major studies evaluating educational programs in South Carolina and also serves as lead evaluator for United Way’s OnTrack Greenville middle school grades success initiative. Robert Morris is the president of the Community Foundation of Greenville, a major funder of OnTrack Greenville. Morris also is a volunteer for the OnTrack Greenville program. William Price is the principal at Tanglewood Middle School and has dedicated his career to Title I schools. Megan Shropshire is the Manager of School Health at Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital. Previously, Shropshire has served as the Safe Schools Coordinator for Safe Kid Upstate and has a background in secondary math education.

Education is one of the five Greenville Women Giving grant funding areas, the other four being the areas of health, human services, the arts, and the environment. Past Greenville Women Giving education grant recipients have included Greenville Literacy Association, Partners in Public Education and Bridges to a Brighter Future.

Greenville Women Giving’s 10th annual celebration of giving is sponsored by Greenville Health System, The Community Foundation, and TOWN Magazine.
