Greer community partners raise walls of Habitat home

April 24, 2017

On Thursday, Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County raised the walls on the 2017 Greer Community Partners Build home, celebrating a commitment to building affordable housing in the Greer community.

The home is being built for the Neriz family. As a Habitat Greenville program participant, homeowner Yadira Neriz will complete 20 hours of homeownership education classes. She will also complete 200 hours of “sweat equity,” building her home and the homes of other Habitat homeowners, alongside volunteers from the partner organizations. She will pay an affordable mortgage for the home.

This home was made possible through the generosity of Greer First Presbyterian Church, John I. Smith Charities, Citizens Building and Loan, Donna O. Smith and Partners and Keith Smith Builders LLC.

Thursday’s wall raising is a significant milestone in a family’s journey to home ownership. During the event, sponsors, partners, and volunteers have the opportunity to write encouraging messages to the family on the beams of the wall, which will then become part of the home during construction.

“We are grateful for the support of our generous Greer partners in helping Habitat Greenville bring affordable housing to all parts of our community and grateful to the faithful volunteers who will help build this home,” said Monroe Free, President and CEO of Habitat Greenville, “We look forward to welcoming the Neriz family into their new home, which will help them build strength, stability and independence.”
