The Groucho’s story began with Harold “Groucho” Miller, a spirited entrepreneur dedicated to creating outstanding deli cuisine. Upon arriving in Columbia, South Carolina in 1941, Harold embarked on establishing his inaugural restaurant, armed with original recipes for potato salad, coleslaw, and dressings. His motto was straightforward yet profound: “Quality is the most vital ingredient in a sandwich.”
Harold Miller’s memorable persona, complete with a cigar and mustache reminiscent of the iconic Groucho Marx, earned him the affectionate nickname that would become synonymous with his establishment. As recounted by his son, Ivan Miller, in a 1986 interview with the Columbia Record, “He was this really lively kind of guy. Always joking, always with a big cigar and a mustache… He looked like Groucho Marx, he talked like Groucho Marx, and to Columbia, he was Groucho Marx. So that is how the name came about.”
