Groundbreaking ceremony for Volvo Car Stadium marks a new chapter in Charleston history

April 14, 2021

Choate Construction Company, Charleston Tennis LLC., LTP Daniel Island, Beemok Capital, State and Local Government officials, and many more gather outside of the Volvo Car Stadium to officially break ground and celebrate the next chapter in Charleston’s top-notch entertainment venue. The groundbreaking ceremony takes place during the intermission between the final, doubles, and singles matches of the 2021 Volvo Car Open.

The 20-year-old Volvo Car Stadium is known for hosting live outdoor concerts and, most notably, the largest women’s-only tennis tournament in North America. The Stadium is in the beginning phases of a complete remodel and transformation.

Ben Navarro, owner of Charleston Tennis LLC, states “Unbelievable memories have been made here, and what we want to do going forward as the City of Charleston has grown to become a world class city is provide a world class venue. I don’t see a torn down stadium; I see the future.”

The renovation will include a refresh of the façade and concourse, which will enclose the top of the Stadium to create an immersive atmosphere. Additionally, upgrades will be made to concession stations and architectural lighting, and the number of on-site restrooms will be increased by 130%.

Previously, the stadium held up to 8,000 people during the annual tournament. When complete, it will be able to hold approximately 11,000 spectators.

“I cannot thank the Navarro family enough for making Charleston a better place and improving our quality of life though their continuous generosity. This facility is going to be a place of excellence for sports and entertainment alike.” Says John Tecklenburg, Mayor of Charleston, SC.

Stadium additions include new hospitality and owner suites, and the centerpiece of the project: a fourstory, state-of-the-art Stage House. This stage house will include everything from wellness facilities, premium locker rooms, exercise space, catering, and food preparation areas, to media and production rooms. The heart of this project, the stage house will serve as the foundation for a permanent canopy that will not only provide shade and weather protection to the south side of the stadium, but also provide critical infrastructure for musical performances.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Choate Construction’s VirtualWorks team provides virtual tours for guests to preview the completed stadium – including all the enhancements and additions – in real time. The grand reopening is planned for Spring 2022.
