440 Knox Abbott Drive, Cayce, SC 29033

COLUMBIA, SC – Growing Home Southeast, a non-profit family services organization, is hosting its fifth annual Oyster Roast on Thursday, February 25, 2016 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Carolina Haven, 807 Bluff Road. Tickets for the event are $30, and proceeds will benefit Leaphart Place, Growing Home Southeast’s supportive housing program.

Opened in September, 2008, Leaphart Place provides, safe, stable and affordable supportive housing for young adults who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. The 20-apartment facility provides an array of services to support each tenant and facilitate a transition to independent living. Residents learn everyday skills such as budgeting, meal planning, shopping, and interview protocol. Rent is income-based: some residents receive Social Security disability benefits, some get state assistance and others have jobs. They range in age from 18 to 25 and come from all parts of South Carolina.

“Leapheart Place provides a bridge to independent living for young people who otherwise wouldn’t have a place to go after foster care,” said Gayle Ricks, president and CEO of Growing Home Southeast. “They have a stable living environment with subsidized rent allowing them to ease into living on their own. Our annual Oyster Roast is a great way to have a lot of fun and at the same time, support a worthy cause. We hope people will come out to the Carolina Haven on Thursday night, October 30th and enjoy an evening of great food, fun, dancing, and bidding, all while supporting a great cause.”

The menu features oysters, Beaufort stew, chili, beer, wine and soft drinks. Entertainment includes dancing and a silent auction. Auction items so far include:

  • Kango cap signed by actor Samuel L. Jackson
  • Sports memorabilia from the University of South Carolina, Clemson, South Carolina State and Charlotte Bobcats
  • Paintings from local artists to include Ernest Lee, “The Chicken Man.
