GSP Turns Fountain Coins Into Charity Donations With New Change for Good Program
July 22, 2026Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport has launched a charitable giving program that converts coins tossed into the airport’s fountains into donations for Upstate nonprofits.
The program, called GSP Change for Good, was announced July 16. Under the initiative, the airport will partner each year with local charitable organizations and distribute the coins collected from its fountains to those groups.
Airport officials said recent collections from the fountains totaled more than $3,000, which provides the initial funding for the program. Every coin dropped into a fountain going forward will contribute to future donations.
Travelers and visitors can take part at the airport’s fountains, including the one on the lawn at the main terminal entrance.
Two organizations were selected as partners for the program’s first year: the Rebuilding Hope Restoring Lives Campaign of The Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee counties, and The Salvation Army of Spartanburg.
Kevin Howell, president and CEO of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District, said millions of passengers and visitors move through the airport each year and many pause to toss a coin into one of the fountains. Change for Good, he said, gives those gestures a destination.
“With GSP Change for Good, those small acts of generosity will help support organizations that are making a difference in our community,” Howell said.
Maj. Michael Harris, area commander of The Salvation Army of Greenville County, said the organization provides food, shelter, clothing and job placement resources each year to individuals and families across the Upstate who are working to regain their footing. He said the fountain donations help sustain those programs.
Capt. Alicia Brooks of The Salvation Army of Spartanburg County said the airport has been a valued community partner and that the Change for Good donations will help the organization continue serving area residents who are struggling to make ends meet.
Beyond the coins themselves, airport officials said the program is intended to introduce travelers to organizations working across the Upstate and to encourage direct giving to those groups.
The announcement comes as the airport moves forward with a slate of major infrastructure work, including a solar array and battery storage system, a glass replacement project on both concourses and a runway rehabilitation that will bring nightly closures beginning this month and two full weekend closures in September.
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is served by seven major airlines and also operates as an air cargo hub, with regular flights to and from Europe, Mexico, Asia and destinations across the United States.
