Guardian ad Litem Program Seeks Volunteers to Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children
July 15, 2026The South Carolina Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program is recruiting volunteers to serve as advocates for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. The next free virtual training class begins August 18, with applications due by August 4.
Volunteer Guardians ad Litem are appointed by the Family Court to represent the best interests of children involved in abuse and neglect cases. After completing specialized training, volunteers gather information about a child’s circumstances, monitor the child’s progress, and provide independent recommendations to the court to help ensure each child has a safe, permanent and stable home.
“Children who have experienced abuse or neglect need caring adults to stand beside them and ensure their voices are heard,” said Erin Riddle Petrella, Regional Recruiter/Trainer – Upstate for the Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program. “Our volunteers play a vital role in helping judges make informed decisions that are in the best interests of the children we serve.”
The free training is offered virtually, with both morning and evening sessions available to accommodate a variety of schedules. No legal experience is required. “An ordinary person has the power to make an extraordinary difference in the life of a child,” Riddle Petrella said.
