Portion of proceeds benefit Lowcountry Food Bank

Lowcountry Food Bank announced that SkyMarket partnered with Chef BJ Dennis on Wednesday to prepare authentic Gullah Geechee meals that were delivered to those lucky enough to order a meal before the scrumptious dinners were sold out. A percentage of proceeds from the meals were donated by SkyMarket to the Lowcountry Food Bank and prepared in Lowcountry Food Bank’s Zucker Family Production Kitchen in North Charleston.

Because food is a celebration, Skymarket wanted to help make it possible for our food-insecure neighbors to enjoy holiday meals this season and beyond.

“Hunger touches us all. Being in the grocery business, SkyMarket understands first hand the importance of fighting hunger,” said V. Scott Stoneburner, SkyMarket Founder and CEO. “We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the extremely valuable community service that Lowcountry Food Bank provides.”

The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast. The Gullah are known for preserving their African linguistic and cultural heritage. The largest group of enslaved Africans brought into Charleston and Savannah came from the West African rice-growing region.*

“I partnered with SkyMarket to prepare these meals because I love the concept and possibilities their service offers,” said Chef BJ Dennis. “Anything that supports the Lowcountry Food Bank, I am all about!”

About Chef BJ Dennis

Born and raised in Charleston, SC, personal chef and caterer Benjamin “BJ” Dennis infuses the flavors and culture of the Lowcountry into his Gullah Geechee cuisine, bringing a new taste to an ever expanding culinary palate of the south.

Chef BJ’s food pays homage to the Gullah Geechee culture. Dennis infuses the techniques of his ancestors, learned from four years of study in St. Thomas, as well as the lessons of his grandparents about eating from the land, to create fresh interpretations of local dishes focusing on in-season, locally sourced vegetables and seafood. Recent trips to Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Barbados, Dominica, U.S. Virgin Islands, Angola, Bahamas and Benin have brought his work full circle. Chef Dennis connects the people and cultures of the African diaspora through food, bringing back a true taste of Gullah Geechee culture.
