Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant hosts an “Angel Tree” for the Christmas Commandos Campaign

November 29, 2017

Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant, located in the Village Pointe Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant, has announced it will once again host an Angel Tree, as part of its support for Christmas Commandos, a local charity that helps children who have lost one or more parents this calendar year receive a Christmas they won’t forget.

The mission of Christmas Commandos is to provide Christmas gifts to children (from newborns to the age of 17) that have lost one or more parents or guardians. The organization is completely volunteer-based.

Gwynn’s places angels on an in-store Christmas Tree dedicated to Christmas Commandos. It will be one of two public sites for Angel Trees in the Mount Pleasant area.

Each angel has a child’s name, age, and their wants and/or needs. The needs can range anywhere from hygiene products, underwear and clothing to winter coats and boots. There has even been a request for a bed. Children can also request games, toys, dolls, bicycles, and video game consoles.

Anyone in the community is welcome to go into Gwynn’s and take an angel off the tree. Christmas gift items are then dropped off at Gwynn’s to be placed under the tree. Christmas Commandos also accepts gift cards, donations, and toys of any kind from now until Christmas Eve.

Gwynn’s employee Ronnie Williams heads up the Christmas Commandos effort with founder Stacy Hamburger. Hamburger started the charity 18 years ago, and Williams has been working alongside her for 14 years.

“After volunteering the first year, I felt the need to help take over the initiative with Stacy,” Williams said. “The cause meant so much to me. This is our youth, these are our kids. We have to pay it forward.”

A team of volunteers will scout out routes before Christmas Eve. Christmas Commandos provides a detailed orientation for volunteers on how to deliver gifts. Volunteers set out on Christmas Eve with the guidance of local police officers to homes throughout the Charleston Tri-County area to drop off all the presents on doorsteps, windowsills, and even hanging from trees.

“It is a complete covert random act of kindness,” Williams added. “The children and their guardians have no idea that this will happen. We work with guidance counselors and hospice to find these children in need,”
