Habitat and Publix dedicate Hernandez family home

On Thursday, Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County and Upstate Publix associates came together to celebrate several milestones with Simonita Hernandez and her family – the dedication of their new Habitat home, and her son’s continued remission from cancer.
Homeowner Simonita Hernandez previously applied for the Habitat program in 2011, but withdrew from the program due to her son’s diagnosis of leukemia. After successful treatment and remission of her son’s disease, Hernandez was able to reenroll in the program, completing 25 hours of homeownership preparation classes and more than 200 hours of sweat equity helping to build her home and other Habitat homes. She will also pay an affordable mortgage for the home.
This home was made possible by funding from Publix Super Market Charities, which pledged $4 million in 2016 to fund the construction of Habitat homes across the Southeast. Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County is one of 40 affiliates to receive funding from Publix.

During the dedication, build partners and sponsors presented the Hernandez family with gifts that will prepare them for life as homeowners, including tools, a vacuum cleaner, lawnmower, and cleaning supplies. Carol Hoffman, a local artist, presented the family a watercolor, and Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild also donated handmade quilts for each family member.
