Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg Named Hearts and Hands Award Recipient

July 1, 2015

SPARTANBURG, SC – Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg was presented The Hearts and Hands Award at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. The award was established by the school’s Board of Commissioners in 1997 to recognize local organizations that provide exemplary and extraordinary service to the students and programs of the school.

Habitat for Humanity has provided hands-on work experiences for students, served on the school’s business advisory council, been actively involved in the school’s career day, and participated in several joint public relations efforts to raise awareness of both organizations. As a result of their work, the students have a greater understanding of workplace skills and safety, and they have learned the value of giving back to the community.

“Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg is deeply honored to receive the Hearts and Hands Award,” said Habitat of Spartanburg Executive Director Lee Close. “Our ability to serve families in need of decent, affordable housing is driven by volunteers who help on the home building sites and in our ReStore, and the students from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind have been faithful volunteers for the mission of Habitat. We are pleased that there is also a benefit for the students to learn working skills while volunteering in the hopes that their future employment prospects will also be enhanced. We treasure this relationship and appreciate the efforts of SCSDB staff who facilitate each visit.”
