Habitat for Humanity raises walls on first home of 2016

January 21, 2016

GREER, SC – Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County will begin its 2016 build season by raising the walls of the Chappell family home in Greer.

The first build of 2016 is sponsored by Michelin, Greenville Technical College, and a grant from Greer State Bank. Both Michelin and Greenville Tech are longtime corporate partners with Habitat. This home will be Michelin’s tenth sponsored home, while Greenville Tech President Keith Miller has participated in all four of Habitat Greenville’s CEO Builds including this year’s build which will start on March 3.

The construction of this home also marks Habitat’s return to the city of Greer for the first time in two years. The organization most recently completed the construction of Abigail Springs, a neighborhood in Taylors.

Thursday’s wall raising will begin at 11 a.m. at the build site, located at 212 Brown Street in Greer.

The wall raising is a significant milestone in a family’s journey to home ownership. During the event, sponsors, partners, and volunteers have the opportunity to write encouraging messages to the family on the beams of the wall, which will then become part of the home during construction.

“The wall raising is such an important moment for our families. It shows them that their hard work in our program has paid off, and they finally get to see the first signs of their home coming together,” said Monroe Free, President and CEO of Habitat Greenville. “We are proud that Michelin and Greenville Tech, two of our longtime partners, are able to share in the first of many moments like this in 2016.”
