Hampton Park senior makes finals for Heisman Scholar program

December 3, 2020

Kathryn Lyons was recently named South Carolina winner and one of 12 national finalists for the Heisman High School Scholarship program – an annual award that goes to senior scholar-athletes who understand the most important victories happen not only on the field, but also in their schools and communities.

Lyons said it was an honor to be named a finalist out of thousands of applicants from across the country. Lyons has been named All-State in four different sports (basketball, soccer, volleyball and cross-country) while at Hampton Park Christian School. She also will be her class’s valedictorian, class president and performed more than 100 hours of community service.

“Being selected as a national finalist is such an honor, and I am so grateful for my family, coaches and teachers who have pushed me to excel in all areas and use my talents for God’s glory,” Lyons said.

Kevin Priest, Hampton Park’s headmaster, said Lyons leverages her gifts and abilities to make others successful.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Kathryn,” Priest said. “Her selection as a national finalist is well deserved, not only for her athletic and academic excellence but especially for her godly character. She is a gifted servant-leader, looking for every opportunity to meet the needs of those around her.”

The Heisman High School Scholarship is presented by Acceptance Insurance. From its inception in 1994, the program has leveraged the reputation of the Heisman Memorial Trophy as a symbol of great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work. The 2020 National Finalists each received a $1,250 college scholarship.

Over the past 26 years, the program has honored more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors and provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarships to students and more than a million dollars to high school academic and athletic programs across the country.

The program honors the nation’s most accomplished, community-minded high school senior athletes. By inviting male and female students from schools across the country to share their stories of leadership and impact, the program aims to inspire all students to harness their potential, push their limits, and use their talents not only to advance their own futures, but to improve the communities and world around them.
