HANAHAN, SC – September 16, 2009 – The National Federation of Independent Business has named Walter Carr of Carr Properties in Hanahan as the 2009 Solveras/NFIB Small Business Champion for South Carolina.

“Walter’s activism speaks for itself,” said J.J. Darby, state director of NFIB/South Carolina, the state’s leading small business association. “He does everything he can to help us carry out our mission to promote and protect the right of our members to own, operate and grow their businesses.”

Carr, a 25-year NFIB member, is chairman of the NFIB/South Carolina Leadership Council, a volunteer group that advises the association on small business issues, and he’s an active member of NFIB’s Charleston Area Action Council, a group that comes together regularly to discuss small business issues.

“Walter is always willing to promote the cause of small business at home and in Columbia,” Darby said. “He took a leadership role in recent legislative battles, and he has been active in efforts to reduce red tape for small business owners. He’s also spoken out on small business issues in letters to the editor and newspaper guest columns.”

Carr, an Air Force veteran who served during the Vietnam War, also has been involved in local politics and civic causes, including the rebuilding of Charleston after Hurricane Hugo. He has served on the board of the Charles Trident Home Builders Association and is a 32nd Degree Mason.

“Walter is the kind of member we can all depend on,” Darby said. “NFIB is the voice of small business in Columbia, but it’s members like Walter who really help our voice be heard.”
