Hanahan High Librarian School Media Specialist of the Year

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Hanahan High School Media Specialist, Dr. Charlene Zehner, was named the South Carolina School Library Media Specialist of the Year.

The award honors full-time media specialists for their exemplary library media programs as well as active participation and service to the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL) and other related professional organizations. Exemplary media programs integrate collaboration, leadership and technology. Qualities of exemplary programs include outstanding and effective support of student learning through well-rounded, innovative and comprehensive program administration; effective collaborative partnerships with teachers in both teaching and learning; and information access.

“I feel humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing my efforts to serve the students, faculty and staff of Hanahan High School,” Zehner said.

As the South Carolina School Library Media Specialist of the Year, Dr. Zehner will make presentations throughout the state to share her methods of best practice. She will also make a presentation at the annual SCASL Conference and the South Carolina Administrators’ Conference and have the opportunity to serve on the SCASL Awards Committee, representing the organization in Columbia on South Carolina Legislative Day.

Principal of Hanahan High School, Richard Raycroft said, “Dr. Zehner is a positive force for innovation and good instruction and she is a source of pride for Hanahan High School. Students flock to her because of the welcoming environment she has created in our school’s media center and they feel challenged by the academic activities she provides.”

The South Carolina Association of School Librarians advocates professional excellence, facilitates collaboration and develops leadership to ensure that school library media programs are integral to teaching and learning in every South Carolina school.
