Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd Announces New Shareholders – Attorneys Applegate, Frick and Spruill elected

CHARLESTON, COLUMBIA, FLORENCE, AND GREENVILLE, SC – January 14, 2009 – Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., is pleased to announce the election of three new shareholders, effective January 1, 2009.  Lydia B. Applegate, Scott E. Frick and Sarah P. Spruill, all litigation attorneys, were named members.

Sarah P. Spruill practices in the Firm’s litigation group in its Columbia office, working on business and commercial matters and other complex litigation. She has represented businesses, governmental entities, and individuals in a broad range of cases and has handled numerous appellate matters.

The Cheraw, SC, native received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2000, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif; Order of Wig and Robe; and South Carolina Law Review.  In 1997, she graduated from USC with a B.A., magna cum laude, with honors from the South Carolina Honors College. 

Prior to joining the Firm, Spruill spent two years as law clerk to The Hon. Kaye G. Hearn, Chief Judge for the South Carolina Court of Appeals. Spruill is admitted to practice in South Carolina, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is a member of the South Carolina and Richland County Bar Associations.

She volunteers for the Junior League of Columbia and Young Carolinians of the South Carolina Historical Society.  She is active with her high school alma mater – the SC Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics – where she serves on the Alumni Association’s board of directors and is past board president.

Lydia B. Applegate practices in the Firm’s Charleston litigation group, focusing on complex business and commercial matters. She has represented clients in complex contract and commercial lease disputes, as well as in class-action lawsuits involving contract and construction defect claims. In addition, she represents clients in the maritime industry involved in admiralty litigation.

Applegate has also been active in appeals before the South Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. She is admitted to practice in South Carolina and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Prior to joining Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, she served as law clerk to The Honorable Jean Hoefer Toal, Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, and as a legal writing instructor at the University of South Carolina School of Law. 

The Charleston, SC, native is a member of the South Carolina Bar, South Carolina Women Lawyers, and Charleston County Bar Associations. She currently serves on the board of Communities in Schools of Charleston.

Applegate received her J.D., cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law, in 2001, where she was a member of the Order of the Wig & Robe; Order of the Coif; and served as Associate Student Works Editor for SC Law Review. In 1997, Applegate received her B.A., cum laude, from The University of the South.

Scott E. Frick practices in the Firm’s Greenville litigation group and brings a wide variety of experiences to the Firm.  He is admitted to practice in South Carolina, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In recent matters, Mr. Frick has:
• Provided assistance in four asbestos cases tried to verdict in North Carolina federal court, resulting in a defense verdict in each case

• Represented a manufacturer in the automotive industry in cases involving allegations of products liability

In previous experience, Frick worked in the Washington, D.C., office of the late U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, where he served as Minority Chief Counsel to the Constitution Subcommittee of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. He also served as a law clerk to The Honorable Dennis W. Shedd of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

In 2000, the Columbia, SC, native received his J.D., from the University of South Carolina.  He achieved academic excellence at Clemson University in 1997, receiving his B.A. and B.S., cum laude, and earning Departmental Honors.
