Healthy Learners Announces New Appointments to Board of Trustees

New Members Enhance Strong Leadership Foundation

COLUMBIA, SC – October 4, 2013 –  Healthy Learners announces the appointment of two members to its Board of Trustees.  The new appointments are Philip Wesley Jackson, II of Rogers, Lewis, Jackson, Mann & Quinn, LLC and Rich Williams of Colonial Life.

Healthy Learners is a faith-based non-profit that connects children to care so that poor health is not an obstacle to doing well in school.  The organization addresses poverty at its root, so that future generations can lift themselves, and their communities, to a better life.

 The Healthy Learners Board members are responsible for governing and acting in the best interest of the organization, said Jo Pauling-Jones, executive director of Healthy Learners.  The Board is made up of individuals who have the talents, skills, experiences and passion to carry out the mission and vision of the organization, and we are blessed to have these new members join us as servant leaders.

Philip Wesley Jackson, II is a partner at Rogers, Lewis, Jackson, Mann & Quinn, LLC.  He represents clients on regulatory and statutory compliance with federal and state healthcare laws in all levels of transactions and acquisitions including provider joint ventures, nursing home acquisitions, development and structure of new joint ventures (ambulatory surgery centers and integrated provider networks). 

Jackson’s previous areas of responsibility include principal at Kerr & Company, Inc, general counsel at Agape Senior, Inc. and Health Care Team attorney at Nexsen Pruet, LLC.  His published paper, Compliance and the Rise in Uncompensated Care appeared in the April 2008 Edition of Compliance Today, a national magazine published by the Health Care Compliance Association. 

Jackson holds a bachelor of science degree from Clemson University, a master of health administration from the Medical University of South Carolina and a juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina  School of Law.  He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, American Health Lawyers Association, North Carolina Bar Association and the South Carolina Bar Association. 

Rich Williams is vice president of Specialty Markets for Colonial Life. He leads the company’s brokerage market nationally and oversees end-to-end sales and support for the large account and public sector markets. He also oversees marketing programs and services that support each of these market segments.

Williams has a broad background in the voluntary benefits industry with roles in sales, client management, strategic growth, operations, finance and corporate development. He first joined Colonial Life in 1999 leading product development and pricing. His previous experience includes roles as chief operating officer and chief financial officer of Strategic Resource Company, an Aetna subsidiary, and in retirement consulting actuarial practice for Mercer.

Williams holds a bachelor’s degree from Wofford College, a master’s degree from Wake Forest University and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
