Help students in action across South Carolina win $25,000 and vote now

October 31, 2016

Communities across the United States answered the call from State Farm® to submit causes that would make a positive impact in their neighborhoods. Now Students In Action, a high school service learning and leadership development program active across South Carolina, needs your help by voting for them to bring funding to the organization. From now through Nov.4, anyone with a valid email address can vote for the Jefferson Awards Foundation’s Students In Action program at http://www.neighborhoodassist.com/entry/1983346 to help it receive a $25,000 grant.  Voters should look for the cause titled, “Service-Learning and Leadership Development for High-Need Youth”.

SC ranks among the states with the lowest high school graduation rates. Research shows that service-learning is a powerful tool for helping youth stay connected to their school environment and remain engaged in the learning process. The Students In Action program does exactly this, engaging students in unique and meaningful ways and helping them identify their strengths, connect to their passion, and make a difference in their community. Students In Action works with youth on leadership and life skills, skills necessary for success in college and the workforce. It also has an exponential effect on communities; by developing the life skills of students through service-learning, communities directly benefit from the charity and philanthropy of Students In Action participants.

Each Students In Action participant makes an average impact valued at of $17,400 through the hours they volunteer, the funds they raise, and the donations they collect in communities across SC. With $25,000, the Students In Action program can make a difference in the lives of 125 young people who will then generate approximately $2,175,000 in community impact. Each year of their engagement, that impact grows — on their school, their community, and on that young person him/herself. The exponential impact that $25,000 from State Farm would have on youth in this state would go a long way.

Two thousand submissions were received through State Farm Neighborhood Assist, a crowd-sourced philanthropic program that empowers communities to identify issues in their neighborhoods. At least one cause was received from every state. The State Farm Youth Advisory Board, a group of 30 students who are passionate about social responsibility, reviewed the submissions and selected the top 200 finalists based on criteria they created.

The 200 causes have until Nov.4 to rally votes and anyone voting is allowed up to 10 votes per day. On Nov. 30, the top 40 vote-receiving causes will be announced at www.neighborhoodassist.com and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to the affiliated nonprofits.

“Neighborhood Assist is another example of State Farm allowing communities to make their own decisions about ways to make lives better in their neighborhoods,” says State Farm spokesman Roszell Gadson.
