HGTC honors longest-serving Chair Tommy Branyon with Chairman Emeritus designation

October 27, 2026

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) has honored Joe T. “Tommy” Branyon Jr. with the designation of Chairman Emeritus, recognizing his 15 years as board chair—the longest in the college’s 60-year history—and over 35 years of dedicated service on the HGTC Area Commission.

The HGTC Area Commission approved the distinction during its Oct. 13 meeting. Branyon joins former commissioners Ken Richardson and Herman C. Jones as the third leader in college history to receive the honor. He will continue to serve as a commission member.

“Tommy Branyon’s thoughtful leadership, integrity, and commitment to student success have guided HGTC through transformative growth,” said Area Commission Chair Robert Hucks. “As we mark our 60th anniversary, it is deeply meaningful to honor someone who has made such a lasting impact on our students and community.”

Throughout his tenure, Branyon championed key initiatives to expand access to higher education and workforce development, including dual enrollment programs, the Technical Scholars Program, and the establishment of Horry County Early College High School. Reappointed for 10 terms, he has participated in selecting three HGTC presidents and supported major capital improvements across all campuses.

Beyond HGTC, Branyon is an active community leader, having served as chair of the Andrews Election Commission, president and current secretary-treasurer of the Andrews Rotary Club, and trustee at Trinity United Methodist Church.
