HGTC Welding students to explore local manufacturing careers during Manufacturing Month
October 9, 2026Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC), in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) and Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments (WRCOG), will give approximately 60 HGTC Welding students an inside look at local manufacturing careers through facility tours at Envirosep and SixAxis in Georgetown County on Friday, Oct. 16.
Students from HGTC’s Conway and Georgetown campuses will visit the two manufacturing facilities beginning at 9 a.m. The tours are being held in recognition of Manufacturing Month and are designed to introduce students to modern manufacturing operations, showcase career opportunities with area employers and strengthen connections between education and the regional workforce.

“Experiences like these allow our students to see firsthand how the skills they are developing at HGTC translate directly into opportunities with employers in our community,” said Dr. Melissa Batten, interim president of HGTC. “We are grateful to SCDEW, Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments, Envirosep and SixAxis for partnering with us to connect our students with local industry and help prepare the skilled workforce our region needs.”
During the tours, students will experience manufacturing environments firsthand and learn more about the skills, technology and career pathways associated with the industry. The visits also provide local manufacturers an opportunity to connect with students who are developing the technical skills needed to enter the workforce.
HGTC Welding instructors Jay Owens and Cameron Thompson from the Georgetown Campus and Josh Evans and Jacob Satterfield from the Conway Campus are helping facilitate the tours.
Manufacturing Day, or MFG Day, is a national initiative that encourages manufacturers and community partners to introduce students, educators and others to modern manufacturing and the career opportunities available within the industry. MFG Day is observed nationally on the first Friday in October, with events and activities continuing throughout Manufacturing Month.
HGTC’s participation reflects the College’s commitment to working with workforce and industry partners to provide students with career-connected learning experiences while supporting the workforce needs of employers throughout the region.
The tours will take place at Envirosep, 31 Aviation Blvd. in Georgetown, and SixAxis, 219 Safety Ave. in Andrews. For more information about MFG Day and Manufacturing Month, visit www.MFGDay.com.
