Hidden Gem in Laurens County: Dirt and Grit Farm Brings a Unique U-Pick Flower Experience
March 19, 2025Nestled in the Woodruff area of Laurens County, Dirt and Grit Farm is more than just a flower farm—it’s a labor of love, dedication, and a dream brought to life. Known for its breathtaking tulip fields and immersive farm experience, this hidden gem is quickly becoming a must-visit destination for families, flower lovers, and anyone looking to embrace the beauty of nature.
A Farm Rooted in Faith and Hard Work
Owned and operated by Jake and Hannah Jensen in partnership with Ashley and Justin Cowper, Dirt and Grit Farm was founded on the simple yet profound idea that growing a garden only requires a little dirt and a lot of grit—hard work, tenacity, and perseverance.
“Our name comes from the belief that all it takes to grow something beautiful is a little dirt and a lot of grit,” said Hannah Jensen. “That’s what farming—and life—is all about.”
The family’s faith serves as their foundation, guided by the Bible verse:
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
This encouragement has carried them through the challenges of maintaining a working farm and ensuring that each guest’s experience is nothing short of magical.
A Sea of Tulips and Daffodils
While the farm features a variety of flowers, its main attraction is the stunning tulip and daffodil fields. Each spring, visitors are greeted with a vibrant wave of color from more than 70,000 tulips and 5,000 daffodils, carefully chosen to include unique colors and varieties that aren’t typically found in grocery stores or garden centers.
“We love double tulips, unique blends of colors, fringed, and parrot tulips,” Hannah Jensen explained. “For daffodils, we go beyond the classic yellow and introduce ruffled and fluffy varieties that many people may not have seen before.”
Maintaining a tulip farm comes with its challenges, from temperature fluctuations affecting stem length to the need for crop rotation every four years to prevent diseases like Tulip Fire. However, despite these hurdles, Dirt and Grit Farm remains committed to providing an intimate and immersive U-Pick experience.
A One-of-a-Kind U-Pick Adventure
Visiting Dirt and Grit Farm during tulip season is a truly special experience. The fields, nestled on about an acre of land, offer a close-up view of nature’s beauty. Visitors can stroll through rows of colorful blooms, handpick their favorite tulips, and take home a fresh bouquet straight from the source.
Beyond flower picking, guests can interact with the farm’s beloved animals, including Nigerian Dwarf goats, mini donkeys, Dexter cows, Tennessee Walker horses, and a big friendly Great Pyrenees named Neva. The farm’s free-ranging chickens, mascot turkey, and guinea fowl add to the rustic charm of the experience.
Family-Friendly Activities and Future Plans
While the U-Pick tulip season has been the farm’s primary focus, Dirt and Grit Farm is expanding its offerings. This year, they’re introducing “Books and Blooms,” a program designed for young families, featuring children’s story time and an interactive farm activity.
“We were so focused on figuring out the ins and outs of hosting last year, but this season we wanted to add something special for families,” Jensen said. “Books and Blooms will give young children a chance to engage with the farm in a new way.”
Additionally, the farm is extending its U-Pick experience into the summer and fall, growing additional crops to ensure more opportunities for visitors to enjoy the farm. They have also partnered with local vendors to enhance the experience by offering food, beverages, and unique gifts alongside the flower-picking adventure.
A Bright Future for Dirt and Grit Farm
Reflecting on their journey, Hannah Jensen shared that the most rewarding part of their work has been seeing visitors experience the beauty of the land with fresh eyes.
“We have the great privilege of living here daily, so hearing guests tell us how much they love the farm and how grateful they are for the experience means the world to us,” she said.
As Dirt and Grit Farm continues to grow, one thing is clear—it is not just a place to pick flowers; it’s a space where community, nature, and a little bit of grit come together to create something truly special.
