Historic Columbia announces November 2016 events

November is full of exciting events at Historic Columbia – from a military-themed Remembering Columbia Series, to a Second Sunday Roll of Columbia’s Civil War sites, to the official kick-off of the holiday season at Historic Columbia with holiday house tours and the annual Santa Signing. The full November calendar of events is highlighted below.

Remembering Columbia: Military Series, Comradery & Conflict, Duty & Honor: Columbia, 1800-1898

Tuesday, Nov. 1 | 12 – 1 p.m.| Robert Mills Carriage House

Historic Columbia’s Remembering Columbia series returns in November for a three-part installment that will provide an insider’s look into the rich past and present of the capital city’s military tradition. This first session will explore local military units, including those that fought in the Civil War and businesses that played a role in war efforts such as the Palmetto Armory and Camp Sorghum.

The Remembering Columbia sessions will take place from noon – 1 p.m. on Nov. 1, 8 and 15 at the Robert Mills Carriage House. Tickets to attend the entire three-part series are $20 per member and $24 per non-member. Admission for individual sessions are also available: Nov. 1 ($10 per member and $12 per non-member), Nov. 8 (Free, thanks to a grant from World War I and America) and Nov. 15 ($10 per member and $12 per non member). Columbia Jewish Film Festival | Once in a Lifetime

Sunday, Nov. 6 | 5 p.m. | Nickelodeon Theater

Columbia Jewish Heritage Initiative, a partnership of Historic Columbia, is proud to support theColumbia Jewish Film Festival and sponsor Once in a Lifetime, an important film about Holocaust education. The film will be screened at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. at the Nickelodeon Theater. After the film, there will be talk-back panel of local educators to discuss the impact Holocaust education has on South Carolina students. Visit historiccolumbia.org to learn more.

Remembering Columbia: Military Series, How the Military Shaped a Modern Southern City (Part 1): Columbia, World War I and its Aftermath

Tuesday, Nov. 8 | 12 – 1 p.m.| Robert Mills Carriage House

Historic Columbia’s Remembering Columbiaseries returns in November for a three-part installment that will provide an insider’s look into the rich past and present of the capital city’s military tradition. This session will explore Columbia during World War I and the establishment of Camp Jackson 100 years ago. This session is part of World War I and America, a two-year national initiative of The Library of America presented in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, and other organizations, with generous support from The National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Palladium Society’s Renovation Rodeo | Melrose Heights

Thursday, Nov. 10 | 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Free for Palladium members, $15 for non-Palladium members

Presented by Modern Exterminating, The Palladium Society’s Renovation Rodeo takes guests on a tour of old homes and buildings in the Columbia area that have been refurbished and renovated while staying true to the roots and history of the house. Explore recent home renovations in Melrose Heights from 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10. Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres as well as beer and wine during the event. Bubbie’s Brisket

Sunday, Nov. 13 | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Beth Shalom Synagogue

Columbia Jewish Heritage Initiative, a partnership of Historic Columbia, is excited to be part of Beth Shalom Synagogue’s 8th annual Bubbie’s Brisket. Representatives from the Columbia Jewish Heritage Initiative will be on hand at the event to collect stories and photos of your Bubbie! Staff from Historic Columbia will have photo scanners and audio recorders for guests to share memories, recipes and stories of your grandmother (all materials will be scanned and returned immediately). Images and stories may be included in a multi-discipline project, which will document as well as provide access to and awareness of local Jewish history. This event will be held from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Beth Shalom Synagogue, located at 5827 Trenholm Road in Columbia. Visit historiccolumbia.org to learn more.

Second Sunday Roll: Bus Tour of Civil War Sites

Join Historic Columbia for a Second Sunday Roll, a bus tour of Columbia’s important Civil War sites, from 2- 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13. Columbia’s antebellum and Reconstruction era structures—including churches, hospitals, armories, governmental buildings and private homes—offer testimony to this tumultuous chapter in our nation’s history. Learn about Columbia during the early years of the war and about the fateful night of Feb. 17, 1865 when 30 percent of the city’s structures were lost to fire. Step-off at the State House and count the iron stars marking where Union cannonballs hit the building. Visit historiccolumbia.org to purchase tickets.

Historic Holiday Tours Begin

Friday, Nov. 18 – Dec. 31 | Robert Mills House and Hampton-Preston Mansion

Free for members | Non-members $8 adults, $5 youth

Historic Columbia will officially kick-off the holiday season on Friday, Nov. 18 when holiday tours of the Robert Mills House and the Hampton-Preston Mansion begin. Guests are invited to see a variety of holiday decorations and experience traditions in both historic homes between Nov. 18 and Dec. 31. Tour guides will provide stories of holidays past in Columbia and discuss how families decorated and entertained during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Tours of the Robert Mills House will be offered TuesdaySaturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Sunday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and tours of the Hampton-Preston Mansion will be offered TuesdaySaturday at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Sundayat 2:30 p.m. Visit the Gift Shop at the Robert Mills House, located at 1616 Blanding Street, to purchase tour tickets. Saturday, Nov. 19 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. | The Gift Shop at the Robert Mills House

To kick-off the holiday season, Historic Columbia will host their annual Santa Signing from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at The Gift Shop at the Robert Mills House. This free, family-friendly event is the perfect opportunity to get into the holiday spirit, visit with Santa, enjoy holiday activities and begin checking off your shopping list! In addition, guests will have the opportunity to tour the historic basement at that Robert Mills House and see the elves hard at work, gingerbread cookies and goodies baked by Mrs. Claus, and wrapped gifts and hanging stocking by the fireplace. Guests will receive 30% off their entire Gift Shop purchase (some exclusions apply) and light refreshments. Santa Signing will take place at the Gift Shop at the Robert Mills House, located at 1616 Blanding Street. Registration for this free event is strongly encouraged. Dollar Sunday | Mann-Simons Site 

Sunday, Nov. 20 | 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. | 1403 Richland Street

$1, free for HC members

Residents of Richland and Lexington Counties are invited to take a guided tour of one of Historic Columbia’s house museums for just $1! This month, visit the newly renovated and reinterpreted Mann-Simons Site for Dollar Sunday. Located on the northeast corner of Richland and Marion streets within the heart of downtown, this property was home, work place, spiritual center and a source of pride for members of the same African American family from 1843 through 1970. General admission prices apply for any house tours after the first. Walk-ins welcome! Tours will be held at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets will be sold on Dollar Sunday at the Mann-Simons Site.

Thanksgiving Hours

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, the last tour on Wednesday, Nov. 23 will be given at 11:30 a.m. and all house museums will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24.

Historic House Museum Tours

Historic Columbia’s historic house museum tours offer a peek into the past! Tour the Robert Mills House, Hampton-Preston Mansion, Mann-Simons Site or the Woodrow Wilson Family Home to learn more about Columbia’s history. Tours are free for members, $8 for adults, $5 youth (ages 6-17) and free for children under 5. For a more detailed tour schedule, visit historiccolumbia.org.

Homeschool Friday: Fort Jackson and Columbia

Friday, Nov. 4 | 10-11:30 a.m. | Robert Mills Carriage House

$5/members, $6/non-members and $8/members and non-members at the event

Fort Jackson is celebrating its 100th anniversary! In honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Homeschool Friday on Friday, Nov. 4 will explore Columbia’s military history and learn about Fort Jackson, the U.S. Army’s largest basic combat training center. Originally opened to train U.S. troops during World War I, Fort Jackson today is responsible for half of the U.S. Army’s basic combat training and trains 60 percent of women entering the army. Students will participate in a variety of activities and see images of Fort Jackson and its soldiers throughout the past 100 years. Homeschool Friday is $5 for members, $6 for non-members and $8 for both members and non-members at the door. The group will meet at the Robert Mills Carriage House, located at 1616 Blanding Street.
