Honor Capital Opens its First Food Store in South Carolina

May 4, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Honor Capital, LLC will open its first Save-a-lot Food Store in South Carolina at 2016 Harden Street, an economic development property of the Columbia Housing Authority.  The ribbon-cutting ceremony, to include several government dignitaries, will be held on Wednesday, May 6 at 9:30 a.m.  The public is invited to attend.

Honor Capital, LLC is a veteran owned and operated business with offices in Miami, FL and Kansas City, MO whose mission is to provide “Equity for Veterans” allowing veterans to continue serving their fellow citizens and community as leaders in business. Honor Capital’s goal is for veterans to help build their communities and create jobs with the guiding American military principles of Integrity and Valor.

Honor Capital’s initial focus is to help Veterans own Save-A-Lot food stores that bring fresh food to under-served communities.   Their first store will be at the Harden Street location.

To that end, the first Owner/Operator in South Carolina is Marcus Scarborough.  A Richland Northeast High School graduate, a United States Naval Academy Graduate, and a former Lieutenant in the United States Navy, Marcus is returning to Columbia and serves as Vice President of Honor Capital for South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.

Marcus Scarborough said, “It’s great for me personally to be back in Columbia.  I am pleased that so many things are happening in downtown and Honor Capital is excited to be a part of that growth.  People are stopping by every day and they are ready for us to open.”

The 20,000 square foot Save-a-lot store is located in the Celia Saxon Shopping Center and was constructed by the Columbia Housing Authority as part of a $50 million community HOPE VI revitalization program funded in part by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.  During the planning process, the overwhelming request by the surrounding neighborhoods is that the citizens wanted a reasonably priced grocery store with quality foods.  It is conveniently located on several bus routes of the COMET system.

Gilbert Walker, Executive Director of the Columbia Housing Authority, is pleased that Honor Capital and Save-a-lot have joined together to serve an area where there are no grocery stores nearby.  “This is a great partnership that will be good for Columbia.  Ever since we built the Celia Saxon retail center, it is the one question I am asked:  when will the grocery store open?  I am very happy to say that day is finally here.”

Save-A-Lot stores bring discount groceries to neighborhoods across the US.  There are more than 1,300 Save-a-Lot stores nationwide in urban, suburban and rural areas. As one of the nation’s leading extreme value grocery chains, they deliver customers terrific savings on discount groceries, up to 40% compared to conventional grocery stores.

From Maine to California, Save-A-Lot stores serve more than 4 million shoppers each week. Customers enjoy grocery store bargains on exclusive Save-A-Lot brands and national brands, plus USDA-inspected beef, pork and poultry, farm-fresh fruits and vegetables and non-food items.

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Harden Street Location will be open for business daily from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
