Traditional Altars: The Heart of the Holiday

Central to Día de los Muertos is the ofrenda—an intricately decorated altar adorned with bright orange marigolds (cempasúchil), candles, photos of deceased relatives, decorative sugar skulls, and traditional offerings of bread, fruits, and favorite dishes meant to welcome returning spirits back for a visit.

BridgeWay Station will host a special Exposición de Ofrendas (Altar Exhibition) spanning three full days, opening on Saturday, Oct. 31, and running through Monday, Nov. 2, giving visitors ample time to view the heartfelt tributes and learn about the symbolism woven into each display.

Catrina & Catrín Costume Contest

During Sunday’s festival, attendees can take part in or cheer on the Catrina and Catrín Contest, open to both children and adults. The contest honors La Calavera Catrina, the elegantly dressed skeleton figure popularized by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada and artist Diego Rivera. Contestants will showcase elaborate skull makeup (calavera), traditional Mexican attire, formal suits, and floral headpieces as they compete for top honors.

With plenty of dining options, coffee shops, and open public seating throughout the plaza, the festival offers an educational and heartfelt cultural experience for families across the Golden Strip. Admission is entirely free, and organizers emphasize that people of all cultural backgrounds are warmly invited to attend and join the celebration.
