How to Become an ExPat Entrepreneur: A Primer for How to Start a Business in the Upstate

Wondering how to build a business here? World Affairs Council Upstate and the Kim & Lahey Law Firm present a morning session on Friday, October 18, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the offices of Montgomery & Associates, CPAs, 101 Roper Creek Drive, Greenville, SC 29615. Learn about the tools you need to start your own business and become an ExPat Entrepreneur. Topics to be covered include everything from forming your company, contracts, best accounting practices, relevant immigration laws, and marketing.

Doug Kim, founding partner of the Kim & Lahey Law Firm, LLC, will discuss everything you need to know to start your new business on solid ground, including: how to form your company in a way that will protect yourself and your family, from naming your company to deciding between an LLC or S Corp. In addition, he will cover the basics of good contracts and intellectual property issues of trademarks and copyrights.

Joe Montgomery, III, a partner in the accounting firm of Montgomery & Co, CPAs, a certified business coach, entrepreneur and technologist, will provide you with the basics of good accounting practices. He loves helping clients navigate complex tax law, and an ever changing technology landscape. He serves as fractional CFO and does high level tax consulting and business development coaching for his accounting firm’s clients. Joe loves small business and seeing people reach their highest potential and will discuss not only good business accounting but also important tax strategies that will help you to position your company in the most advantageous way. Getting the details right at the beginning is one important key to success.

Rebecca Sigmund, immigration attorney at Ogletree Deakins, will overview the issues surrounding new business owners and their visa status. Will your visa allow you to start a new business in the United States? Rebecca advises companies on immigration alternatives for prospective employees as well as matters relating to employment eligibility of workers. Her practice largely involves securing appropriate temporary working visas and permanent residency for executives, managers, investors, technical personnel and other professionals to authorize their employment in the United States.

David Esch, consultant and mentor with SCORE, will outline the innumerable resources available for new business owners along with marketing tips for a successful launch. He has served SCORE clients for over 10 years in the SC Upstate; 30 years consulting, managing programs and offices with for-profit and non- profit organizations. David has lived and worked in four countries, and consulted in over 35 different countries.
