Humane Society Names Joseph Savitz Volunteer of the Year and Names New Officers to Board of Directors

COLUMBIA, SC – June 7, 2013 – The Humane Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which offers low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to end animal overpopulation and investigates and addresses animal cruelty complaints named Joseph Savitz volunteer of the year at the organization’s annual meeting on Monday June 3, 2013.

Savitz, who has retired as attorney of the South Carolina Office of Appellate Defense, is an animal advocate who had a desire to share his time with the Humane Society serving animals and pet owners in our community. Savitz frequently volunteers in the Humane Society’s office answering phones and using his legal background to assist callers with issues related to local and state animal cruelty laws. He also helps with other administrative tasks and animals at the Humane Society’s office.

“Joe’s help has been an invaluable resource. He can speak knowledgeably with our callers and, when necessary, advise them on finding help for situations where animals might be neglected,” said Wayne Brennessel, executive director of the Humane Society, “His level of experience and expertise certainly makes him an asset for our organization and we are grateful for his help.”

Additionally, the Humane Society has elected new officers to its board of directors.

  • Jared Libet, an attorney with the South Carolina Attorney General’s office, has been elected president.
  • Carrie DeVier, an attorney with McNair Law Firm, P.A., has been elected vice president.
  • Michelle Jones, a certified public accountant with Elliott Davis, has been named treasurer.
  • Karl Kemmerlin, vice president of Companion Life Insurance, has been named secretary

These new members join the Humane Society’s other board members, including: Allen Amsler, Mary Denis Cauthen, Stacie Clark, Frank Ellington, Keller Foster, Jennifer Harter, Michelle Jones, Jill Kuppens, Todd Lewis, Jim Mayfield, Rick Migliore and Dr. Caroline Weber.
