I-26 eastbound lane closure in Newberry County starting 8 pm Sunday, July 31, 2016

July 29, 2016

Heavy Traffic Congestion Expected

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to close one lane along a portion of Interstate 26 Eastbound in Newberry County for emergency bridge repairs 8 p.m. Sunday, July 31, to Friday, Aug. 5.

The right lane of I-26 will be closed for approximately 2.5 miles beginning at mile marker 81 for repairs to the bridge over the Palmetto Trail west of Crims Creek. The right lane will remain closed while bridge deck is being repaired. Westbound traffic is not impacted.

Because only one lane eastbound will remain open, heavy traffic congestion is anticipated. Motorists should plan ahead and consider alternate routes by using interstate exits such as 72, 74 or 76. The lane closure will begin at mile marker 81.

The speed limit will drop from 70 mph to 45 mph in the work zone. Motorists are advised use caution when traveling in the work zone for their safety and the safety of highway workers.

The average daily traffic along this portion of I-26 is 41,800 vehicles per day.

Cracking caused by deterioration of aging infrastructure of the bridge deck was found during a routine inspection by SCDOT bridge engineers.

The SCDOT contractor will be working around the clock to repair approximately a 450-square foot section of bridge deck. Completion of repairs is expected on Friday, Aug. 5, barring delays due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Road conditions can be monitored by SCDOT’s 511 Traveler Information System: http://www.511sc.org/ with a free app available.
