Inaugural Laurens Film Festival to Debut Oct. 23 at Historic Capitol Theatre

The City of Laurens is preparing to roll out the red carpet for its inaugural Laurens Film Festival, set for Oct. 23 at the historic Capitol Theatre in downtown Laurens.

Billed as a celebration of creativity, storytelling and local talent, the festival will showcase short films created by students, emerging filmmakers and members of the community. Selected films will be screened during a special Film Festival Night at the Capitol Theatre, located at 104 E. Main St.

Organizers are inviting filmmakers of all experience levels to submit their work. Whether a seasoned storyteller or a first-time creator with a smartphone, anyone with a film to share is encouraged to enter.

The competition features five categories: Student Film for middle school students in grades 6-8, Student Film for high school students in grades 9-12, Emerging Filmmaker for college students and those under age 25, Community Film open to all ages, and the Laurens Stories Award for films that highlight Laurens history, culture or landmarks.

Entries must be original and suitable for a general audience. Films are limited to 10 minutes or less, with student films capped at five minutes. Movies that have previously been submitted to, selected by, screened at or awarded by other festivals remain eligible for consideration.

Filmmakers should keep several dates in mind. Submissions are due Oct. 7, finalists will be announced Oct. 14, and the festival will take place Oct. 23.

The event adds a new chapter to the story of the Capitol Theatre, the city-owned venue that recently marked its 100th anniversary.
