Inland Port Greer is proven model for short haul intermodal

South Carolina Ports’ Inland Port Greer offers shippers established intermodal connectivity to key population centers in the U.S. Southeast, with direct access to the Port of Charleston. In 2025, Greer had a record year with nearly 200,000 rail moves, cementing the inland port’s position as the standard for high volume, short-haul intermodal rail.
Strategically located along the bustling I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte, Greer provides swift access to rail and interstate, allowing shippers to reach 94 million customers within a one-day truck drive. Just-in-time supply chains and BCOs with demanding cargo benefit from 11-minute turn times, 24/7 gate access, and overnight rail provided by Norfolk Southern six days a week.
Inland Port Greer opened in 2013, anchored by the region’s advanced manufacturers, and rapidly expanded its cargo base with mega retailers and consumer goods industries, touting an average of 13% year-over-year growth in its first decade of operation.
Greer now regularly serves more than 150 customers throughout the Southeast, with strong export demand helping to balance the flow for ocean carriers calling the Port of Charleston.
“What began as a strategic investment for key local clients 13 years ago, has grown into a critical asset for the entire Southeastern supply chain,” SC Ports President and CEO Micah Mallace said.
“Inland Port Greer offers better service level at a lower cost; those two do not typically go hand in hand. This unique offering has proven to be a game changer for the many shippers utilizing this inland port.”
To prepare for planned growth, SC Ports recently completed a customer-driven $55 million expansion project at Inland Port Greer, boosting its annual rail lift capacity to 300,000. Site enhancements include an expanded container yard to increase cargo capacity by 50%, an expanded chassis lot, and 9,000 feet of additional rail to efficiently handle longer trains. The Greer-Charleston route is one of the largest international intermodal lanes in Norfolk Southern’s network.
