Interim HealthCare of the Upstate announces CEO transition

January 26, 2021

Interim HealthCare of the Upstate, a leading area provider of home health care, hospice and personal care services, today announced that Charles McDonough has been named Chief Executive Officer. McDonough succeeds co-founder Charyl Schroeder, who steps down as the company’s Chief Executive Officer but will stay involved with company leadership as Executive Consultant. Mrs. Schroeder is the wife of the late Ray Schroeder, founder of Interim Healthcare of the Upstate.

“This leadership transition comes at a time when our company is experiencing strong, sustainable growth, and we have reached a natural inflection point. Through a rigorous, national selection process, we were introduced to Charles, and we were impressed by his skill set, experience and passion for serving others. We have every confidence that he is capable of leading Interim Healthcare of the Upstate into its next chapter,” said Chris Lupo, an owner and board member of the company.

“On behalf of our entire organization, I would like to thank Charyl for her years of dedication and service, expertise, and passion. Under her leadership we have continued to honor Ray’s legacy and are grateful for the opportunity to build upon the foundation he created,” he added.

Founded in 1979 by Ray Schroeder, Interim Healthcare of the Upstate was Interim Healthcare’s first franchised office in South Carolina. As a Toronto native, Mr. Schroeder had very few contacts in the Upstate upon his arrival, however through his determination and drive he successfully grew the company to serve 15,000 patients across eight Upstate counties. Interim Healthcare now ranks as the largest home healthcare agency in the Upstate with more than 800 employees offering services in the areas of home health care, senior care, hospice, palliative care, personal care and healthcare staffing.

Under the Schroeder’s leadership, Interim Healthcare of the Upstate has prioritized the art of benevolence. The organization has been recognized multiple times for its service by philanthropic organizations like Meals on Wheels and Miracle Hill Ministries. In 2016, the couple also founded the Grace Foundation, named after Ray’s mother. The nonprofit organization aims to enrich the quality of others’ lives—especially those near the end of life.

Charles McDonough comes to Interim Healthcare of the Upstate with years of experience in post-acute and hospital-based services. In his former role as Senior Vice President at Graham Healthcare Group, he was responsible for more than 2,800 employees who cared for patients across multiple states on a daily basis. He received his Master of Health Administration with an emphasis in Health Policy and Administration from Pennsylvania State University.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to lead Interim Healthcare of the Upstate on its next journey,” said McDonough. “The core values instilled by the Schroeders that are embedded in this organization will continue to serve as the driving force behind every decision that we make, and our employees and patients should expect consistency in all aspects. I look forward to taking steps that will enhance our abilities and amplify our offerings all while upholding the mission of honoring God through the enrichment of human life.”
