Intramed Plus marks 30 years of innovative healthcare service

May 19, 2021

Intramed Plus, Inc., is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, marking three decades of service to patients across South Carolina as a pioneer in home infusion therapy.

Dr. Varner Richards, PharmD, opened Intramed Plus on May 21, 1991, with the mission to provide exceptional, patient-focused infusion care. Since then, he has led the company’s growth from a single office in Columbia to a network of thriving pharmacies and Infusion & Medical Centers in the Midlands, Lowcountry, and Upstate that host patients in-person and serve as hubs for in-home care across the Palmetto State.

“We’re proud to have come this far and most of all are privileged and humbled to have been trusted by thousands of patients to provide leading-edge infusion care that has kept up as techniques, tools, and technologies have steadily advanced,” Dr. Richards said. “I’m also grateful to all those professionals who have worked with Intramed Plus over the years. A great team is the first ingredient to providing great care.”

Dr. Richards spent six years as Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services at the former Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital before opening Intramed Plus. He had earlier earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and first recognized the life-improving potential of in-home infusion therapy while he was growing up in rural Nebraska and saw his mother tending to his father’s medical needs.

Along with growing a thriving practice, Dr. Richards has been an active participant in his profession’s leading trade association: the National Home Infusion Association, which was created the same year Dr. Richards founded Intramed Plus.

In recognition of his leadership in advancing the interests of patients and standards of the home infusion industry, Dr. Richards received the NHIA’s Gene Graves Lifetime Achievement Award on April 22 this year.
