It’s Jazz Time at PC!

April 27, 2022

The newly formed Jazz Band at Presbyterian College performed to a large crowd for their debut on Tuesday night.

The program included eleven pieces with classic jazz selections and less known selections all highlighting the talent of the band and several guest soloists.

The audience was responsive and engaged throughout the evening and the program seemed to fly by.

“I am so proud of this band and the work they have put into it,” said Dr. Giovani Briguente, director of the band.  “The band has only been together for a few months, but they are so talented that everything just came together.”

Musicians in the band and guest performers included:

  • Amy Link, voice
  • Ezra Ha, voice
  • Joshua Masundah, mbira and voice
  • Daniel Norris, alto saxophone
  • Leigh Tumblin, trumpet
  • Rachel Vondergeest, trumpet
  • Guy Tumblin, tenor trombone
  • Cole Hooker, valve trombone
  • Avery Long, bass trombone
  • Patrick Leonard, piano
  • Alan Turner, double bass
  • Jim Adair, drumset
  • Yakim Herriot, percussion

Similar to the PC Wind Ensemble, the PC Jazz Band is a music ensemble created from the special collaboration between students and community members.

The entire program was delightful. A particularly poignant moment was the solo by Joshua Masundah, an international student from Zimbabwe who played the mbira and sang Ivai Nesu Mwari Baba, a traditional song from Zimbabwe. The response from the crowd was thunderous applause.

If you didn’t make it to the concert, there is good news.  There are plans for more performances in the future.

Stay tuned.
