Jack Cohoon receives Civic Star Award from Richland Bar

Jack Cohoon, an attorney with Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, has received the Richland County Bar Association’s Civic Star Award. The honor recognizes exceptional and meritorious community service.
Cohoon was recognized Wednesday during the Bar Association’s Annual Meeting and Holiday Party. He joins a notable list of award recipients that includes Columbia Mayor Stephen Benjamin. Burnette Shutt & McDaniel co-founders Nekki Shutt and Kathleen McDaniel are also past recipients.
Cohoon has long been active as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. He’s a member of Legal Eagles of the Indian Waters Council, a group of Eagle Scouts who work in the legal profession and in law enforcement. He led the effort to conduct three large events that brought together lawyers, judges, and law enforcement professionals, many of whom are Eagle Scouts, to help hundreds of scouts earn their Law merit badge. In 2018, the Chinquapin District of the Indian Waters Council honored Cohoon with its Cubmaster of the Year award in recognition of his work with the youngest scouts.
Cohoon also was part of the Burnette Shutt & McDaniel team that earned Pro Bono Leader honors in 2020 in recognition of its outstanding participation in the ABA’s Free Legal Answers program.
Additionally, Cohoon shares his legal knowledge with both other attorneys and the community at large through Continuing Legal Education seminars and webinars in conjunction with the South Carolina Bar Employment and Labor Law Section and SC Appleseed and SC Legal Services.
