James Lemon, DMD appointed Chair of MUSC Board of Trustees

Dr. James Lemon has been appointed Chair of the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Board of Trustees. A graduate of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine at MUSC, Lemon completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Emory University. His licensures include certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and designation as a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He practices with Midlands Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Columbia and is a member of the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA).

A graduate of Clemson University and a native of Barnwell County, Dr. Lemon enjoys as hobbies boating, fishing, golf, and hunting. Elected to the MUSC board in 2014, he serves as the medical professional representative from the 2nd Congressional District. Lemon most recently served as vice-chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees. Lemon is past-president of the Greater Columbia Dental Society, Central District Dental Society, and the South Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He will serve a two year term as Board Chairman.

Dr. Lemon marks the first dentist and SCDA member to be appointed chair of the MUSC Board since William C. Draffin, DDS, who served from 1974-1976.

The MUSC Board of Trustees is the final authority and the governing body of The Medical University of South Carolina, its colleges, outreach programs, and ancillary functions. The Board establishes the general policies of the University, defines educational programs, and approves annual budgets. The Board names the principal officers of the University, including the President and Vice Presidents. Meeting six (6) times a year, the comprised group includes physicians, dentists, a former educator, engineer, a former congressman, business executives, a CPA, and an attorney.

In speaking of his appointment, Lemon stated “I am extremely humbled and honored to have been unanimously elected by my Board colleagues to serve as Chair. I look forward to continuing the important work of providing strong governance and guidance to MUSC’s constituents and operations as well as promoting the field of dentistry.”
