Jefferson Awards Foundation Celebration of Service to recognize local student leaders

April 23, 2017

The Jefferson Awards Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a culture of service across America, will be hosting its annual Celebration of Service event on Tuesday, April 25 from 9 AM to 12:30 PM at North Charleston City Hall. To attend as a guest, register at the following link: http://bit.ly/2no3bFI.

The Celebration of Service recognizes high school student groups from throughout the Lowcountry who participate in the Jefferson Awards’ Students In Action program, the foundation’s flagship service-learning and leadership development initiative for youth.  Students In Action was originally brought to Charleston several years ago by former Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.

Student groups from Charleston County School of the Arts, Fort Dorchester, Garrett Academy, James Island Charter, Stratford, and Summerville High Schools will give presentations on April 25 for the chance to win a bronze, silver, or gold Jefferson Award of their own.  The students will be evaluated on their public speaking skills, ability to effectively use a visual aid, professionalism, and other criteria.  The score that the students receive on this oral presentation will be combined with their score from a written entry, which outlined their year-long service efforts, leadership challenges, and successes leading their school’s volunteer projects.

The most outstanding student team will also be awarded a plaque on April 25. This school will then become eligible to represent South Carolina at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony in Washington, DC in June. Last year’s most outstanding student team from the Lowcountry region was from Fort Dorchester.
