Founded in 1926, Greenville Theatre is the Upstate’s oldest and largest locally producing nonprofit theatre company. Now celebrating 101 years, Greenville Theatre’s mission is to inspire, educate, entertain, and connect the community through necessary art and storytelling.

The company produces six mainstage “GT Broadway Series” shows and two “GT Off-Broadway” productions each year. In addition to productions, the theatre also hosts specialty events, concerts, and fundraisers throughout the season.

Located on Heritage Green, the cultural campus in downtown Greenville, Greenville Theatre owns its 1967 building, which features a 571-seat proscenium auditorium. The organization is known for celebrating and working with local actors, directors, choreographers, designers, musicians, and artists throughout the Upstate, producing Broadway-caliber shows, and creating an environment that welcomes the entire community.

Position Overview

Greenville Theatre is seeking a kind, charismatic, visionary, and community-driven individual to guide the theatre into its next 100 years of artistic excellence.

The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative leader and strategic financial supervisor of the organization. This individual is responsible for upholding the environment, culture, standards, and expectations within the workplace.

The Executive Director will oversee:

  • Annual budget development and financial sustainability
  • Donor relations and fundraising strategy
  • Community impact and engagement
  • General operations
  • Marketing and branding
  • Staff management and HR supervision

This role also serves as the primary liaison between staff and the Board of Directors.

The ideal candidate must have a strong love, appreciation, and understanding of musical theatre and straight plays. They must believe in the power of live theatrical storytelling and its impact on a community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership to best serve the community and organization
  • Uphold the mission, vision, handbook, and core values of the company
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget
  • Ensure financial health and revenue strategies
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff
  • Oversee financial reporting, audits, and cash flow
  • Oversee grant writing efforts
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate partners
  • Identify and develop new revenue opportunities
  • Collaborate with other nonprofit arts leaders to best serve the broader community
  • Deliver curtain speeches alongside the Artistic Director
  • Provide HR supervision
  • Oversee branding, marketing, and community engagement
  • Champion kindness, inclusion, and equity throughout the organization

Key Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts administration, management, business, or a related field

Experience

  • Passion for and belief in the power of live theatre
  • Five or more years of experience in nonprofit or arts management
  • Strong knowledge of musical theatre and straight plays
  • Successful fundraising background
  • Public speaking experience
  • Knowledge of nonprofit financial systems and grant writing

Working Conditions

  • Must reside in or relocate to the Upstate of South Carolina (moving stipend included)
