COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Chapter of the National Safety Council (SCNSC) announced that Jody Jernigan has joined the organization as Executive Director.

Jernigan comes to SCNSC after 18 years of experience with the YMCA in Maryland, Virginia, Texas and South Carolina. Most recently, he served as the Chief Operating Officer for the YMCA of the Chesapeake in Easton, Maryland, where he supervised and led operations of three full facilities, three store fronts and a camp program site with a budget of $7.5 million and approximately 25,000 members.

Jernigan was born and raised on the coast of North Carolina. He attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies/Public Relations.

It was during his time at UNCW that Jernigan found his way to the YMCA where he worked in the areas of camp, outreach, teens, sports and aquatics until moving into the role of Executive Director of the YMCA of Greater Houston in 2004.

During his time with the YMCA, Jernigan was promoted to various positions including Senior Program Director, District Executive Director for Program and Leadership Development and Chief Development Officer. In these roles, he honed his passion for staff and leadership development, and he was selected to travel with the YMCA of the USA leadership development staff several times per year to train up-and-coming leaders in the Y movement.

As the nation’s largest non-profit safety and health membership service organization, the Safety Council offers an unparalleled spectrum of resources to help communities build and support safety and health initiatives in all aspects on the job, on the road and in the home. The organization offers dozens of online and in-person training courses including Alive at 25, Defensive Driver Training and OSHA standards.

“Jody brings a wealth of nonprofit management experience to our organization,” said Brian Pearson, board chairman for SCNSC. “As we continue to explore the many ways that SCNSC can help make South Carolinians safer at work and at home, the board is very confident in Jody’s ability to provide the staff and community leadership to move our organization forward and provide value to our members, partners and sponsors.”

Jernigan and his wife Paige have two daughters, Anderson (age 11) and Campbell (age 7).
