Joe’s Place Bookstore will be closing their chapter at the end of 2019

October 28, 2019

After five years of being Greenville’s go-to place for rare, used, and new books, the owners of Joe’s Place Bookstore have announced that they will be closing at the end of the year.

Owners Mary and Alix Bernard started the family-owned bookstore, Joe’s Place, as a tribute to Mary’s brother, Joe, who passed away unexpectedly in June of 1999. However, they have decided to retire from the business.

“Alix and I have a combined 120 years of living,” Mary Bernard said. “It’s time for our next chapter.”

Located at 2 Williams Street in the Pettigru District of the award-winning downtown Greenville, Joe’s Place is known for its great selection of new and used books. However, the two-story location has built an ambience around the artwork adorning the walls as well as its baked goods and monthly events ranging from trivia nights to wine tastings to book clubs. Until the end of the year, Joe’s Place will keep their regular hours, Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We’re so grateful for the opportunity we had to own Joe’s Place. Not everyone gets the chance to create a business curating things they’re passionate about,” Alix Bernard said. “But we are ready for some relaxation.”

As the Bernard’s head into retirement, they are confident that their steadfast customers, vendors and friends will keep the memory of Joe’s Place alive. The couple will always be proud of the devotion they put into making sure the Greenville community made new friends at Joe’s Place, in print and in person. They are in the process of listing the property for sale but would also be very interested in selling the business and / or the assets. The building is being listed by Deanna Hudgens, owner of Signature Commercial Properties LLC. She can be reached through email at [email protected] or phone 864-517-4600.

“As with any book you really love, it has to end sometime”, Mary Bernard said.
