John S. Nichols Named 'Lawyer of the Year'

April 2, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – April 2, 2013 – SC Lawyers Weekly, the state’s top source for legal information for practicing attorneys, has named John Shannon Nichols the 2013 “Lawyer of the Year.” Nichols is the first-ever recipient of this esteemed honor.

A founding partner at Bluestein, Nichols, Thompson, and Delgado, LLC (BNTD) — Nichols focuses on appellate practice and general tort litigation. He has nearly 20 years of experience advocating for justice on behalf of everyday South Carolina citizens. Nichols is currently assisting with a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act and keep a young child with her father.

“John has always been committed to helping those in need — he is a true advocate for justice,” said Marti Bluestein, founding partner. “It has been an honor to work with John over these past many years, and I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.”

“Throughout his career, John has become known for his passion and dedication to worthwhile causes. He believes in protecting the rights of everyday people, in advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. To be sure, John is a leader in our profession, and I am grateful to call him a colleague and a friend,” said John Delgado, partner.

Nichols was selected for this honor because he received the highest scores from judges evaluating attorneys for the magazine’s annual “Leaders in the Law” award recipients. He is being recognized for his commitment to better the legal profession through his work and community involvement.

Nichols has spent his career giving back to the profession. He currently serves as the Chair of the Solo and Small Firm Section of the South Carolina Bar and as a member of the Professional Responsibility Committee. He is a past president of the South Carolina Association for Justice, formerly the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, and serves on the Association’s Board. Nichols is a former president of the South Carolina Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

“Receiving recognition from my peers — many of whom have done incredible work to better our community and profession — is so humbling, and I am grateful to the colleagues who have presented me with such an honor,” said Nichols. “At the end of the day, I do the work I do because of my clients. They extend the greatest trust to me when they ask me to advocate on their behalf, and I am always thankful and honored to be given the opportunity to serve them.”
