Join the Plishing Challenge

Let’s go fishing and help clean up our waterways!

The South Carolina Wildlife Federation is launching a new initiative called the SCWF Plishing Challenge to encourage people to go fishing and pick up litter this summer. “Plishing” is a combination of the Swedish phrase “plocka upp” which means litter pick up, and fishing. Anglers new and old can join this challenge as they set out on their fishing adventures. Many anglers already practice cleaning up the waterways where they fish and now you can earn points for doing just that. Monthly points leaders for both fishing and litter pick up will receive some incredible prizes from our sponsors with the 3 overall summer winners each receiving a $500 gift card to Palmetto State Armory.

“Because of the pandemic, over the past two years we have seen a lot of new anglers start fishing. We want to nurture that and encourage them, as well as experienced anglers, to keep enjoying our beautiful aquatic habitats and to help us keep them clean and litter free”, said BeBe Dalton Harrison, Director of Education for the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.

Participants in the challenge can log points for each bag of litter they collect, each fish caught, and for each healthy release.

Harrison continued, “Anglers do not have to release a legal fish if they want to keep it, but if they do choose to release it, they will get an extra point to log in the challenge”.

Anglers who register for the Plishing Challenge will download an app where they can log their catches, releases, and litter that they collect. During the summer months, points leaders and a randomly selected participant will receive prizes each month.

Individuals interested in conserving and protecting our state’s aquatic habitats are invited to register for this challenge. Over the summer months, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation will share information on how to help keep our state clean, best fishing practices to use when releasing fish, and we will highlight some unique places where you can go fishing. Fishing is a great way to spend time connecting with your friends, family, and the environment. The Plishing Challenge will run from June 1 to August 31 but you can register now or at any time during the event.
