Judge Marc H. Westbrook to be Remembered at Bar Foundation Gala

COLUMBIA, SC (March 18, 2014) – The South Carolina Bar Foundation will remember Judge Marc H. Westbrook at the 2014 Bar Foundation Gala on March 21. The Foundation will recognize the judge during the portion of the program titled Martha’s Moment. This component of the gala was created in memory of Martha B. Dicus. It was established to remember those lawyers who passed too soon, but during their lifetimes, displayed a tremendous commitment to public and professional service in the legal community.

Judge Westbrook graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973. He was in private practice for 10 years following graduating. In 1976, Judge Westbrook became the youngest member elected to the Lexington County Council. He remains the youngest person to serve as chair of the council.

In 1978, Judge Westbrook was elected to the SC House of Representatives for Lexington County, where he served until his appointment as a Family Court judge in 1983. He was elected to the Circuit Court in 1994.  

In his community, Judge Westbrook served as a member of the Joint Commission on Alternative Dispute Resolution, presiding judge over Lexington County Drug Court and chair of the planning committee for the Lexington County Judicial Center Building Project. Following the passing of Judge Westbrook, the judicial center was named in his honor.

A former member of the Palmetto Mastersingers, Judge Westbrook enjoyed participating with the Lexington Baptist Association as music director and member of its executive committee.

After his untimely passing in September 2005, the Marc H. Westbrook Memorial Scholarship for first-year law students was created in his memory.
