Junior Achievement, Dominion Energy, and Lexington One Technology Center partner to inspire girls to go into STEM-related careers

February 19, 2020

Junior Achievement (JA), Dominion Energy and Lexington One Technology Center (LTC) will host seventy female high school students from Lexington One Technology Center for the JA Girls STEM Summit Thursday, Feb. 20, 7-11 a.m. Students will learn from local women in STEM careers at companies in the Midlands. These women will expose the students to career possibilities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Through this Junior Achievement experiential learning opportunity, students are prepared to be thinkers and encouraged to develop personal strategies to pursue lifelong learning and career opportunities in STEM-related fields.

“Dominion Energy recognizes the importance of a STEM-based education as we develop future leaders in the energy industry,” said Rodney Blevins, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. “That development must begin early by showing students the possibilities and opportunities available to them. This summit will give these students a chance to see and hear from women who are thriving in their careers in science, technology, engineering and math.”

Michele Lucas, Career Specialist at Lexington Technology Center, stated, “It is great to partner with organizations like Junior Achievement who believe in the importance of exposing students to careers. Being able to bring in guests is a great way we can bring to life what we teach out students about careers. By putting a face and name with a future opportunity, students are able to make better informed decisions about their career paths.”

Casey Pash, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Greater South Carolina, stated, “Every day we see more and more need to have a ready workforce. STEM careers are ones that need future works, and many times this workforce is not diverse, that is why Junior Achievement has partners with Dominion Energy and Lexington One Technology Center to show female students exactly what women can do in STEM careers. Seeing is believing, and by bringing STEM career women to them to share their story, it is a great way for JA to inspire. Without Dominion Energy and Lexington One Technology Center this would not be possible. We are grateful for their support to continue to inspire the future workforce in STEM related careers.”
